We think there's just one dictionary. Wrong! We all have our own. Many words have no universal meanings. Take "selfish" "available" and "caring." Each person defines these differently. Yet the words can damage our love life. Just listen: "You're selfish!" "You are so unavailable!" "You just don't care how I feel!" We react but never stop to realize that we don't know what the other person MEANS by "selfish" "available" or "caring." Stop and think. You don't even know what the words mean! If someone calls you "selfish," don't take it personally. Instead, ask "What did I specifically say or do that made me appear selfish to you?" This gives you information. It may help you iron out misunderstandings -- or to change something. You might even ask: "What can I specifically say or do to let you know I do care how you feel?"
